ARTIST PROFILE

Souryadeep Bhattacharyya is a sarod artist whose music is shaped by warmth, emotional honesty, and a deep personal connection with his listeners. Performing effortlessly with a natural smile, he invites audiences into a meditative yet emotionally rich experience—one where melody feels personal, alive, and deeply human.

""His music is fluid, like cascading water rising to a crescendo as it swirls around rocks, seeking a more serene cadence when it slows to a gentle flow before plunging over a cliff in free falling melody." - Khabar Magazine

Souryadeep’s musical grounding is both rigorous and rooted in deep tradition. He began his musical journey at the tender age of four and a half under Late Sri Jayanta Roy Chowdhury, whose formative guidance laid the foundation for his discipline and musical sensitivity. He later became a Gandabandhan disciple of the legendary sarod maestro Pt. Alok Lahiri in the Maihar Gharana, signifying a lifelong commitment to learning, and continues to receive guidance from him and his son, the brilliant sarodiya Sri Abhisek Lahiri.

Souryadeep is an empaneled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), recognized by the Government of India to represent Indian culture in international and diplomatic events. While attaining permanent artist empanelment with All India Radio was a long-cherished recognition, a defining milestone in his musical journey was winning the All India Inter-University Gold Medal in Instrumental Music, a moment that affirmed his inner belief as an artist and strengthened his resolve to pursue music with conviction.

Souryadeep’s artistic identity has been shaped by lived experience. During his formative years, he committed himself to pursuing two demanding paths in parallel—classical music and chemical engineering—each with equal discipline and seriousness. Rather than choosing between them, he embraced the challenge of excelling in both, allowing music to remain a space of authenticity and emotional truth rather than mere technical display.
Intimate concerts have been especially defining. In close listening spaces, he senses the silence before applause, and is humbled by the affection of listeners who stay back to share how his music moved them. These moments clarify his purpose. For Souryadeep, an artist exists for the audience; music must give back. His guiding belief is simple and uncompromising: if the music does not touch hearts, it has failed—no matter how technically accomplished it may be.

“His happiness is visible when he plays—it flows directly through the sarod.” —  Audience Feedback

This philosophy reflects his core artistic ethos: rooted tradition, living expression. Tradition, for Souryadeep, is not optional—it is his identity. Living expression is the harder pursuit: finding an honest personal voice within tradition and allowing the music to breathe in the present moment. His music represents melodic integrity, emotional continuity, integration of various styles and sincerity of intent.

Currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Souryadeep continues to share his music across concert halls and festivals including the Lincoln Center, Chicago Cultural Center, Basant Bahar etc. along with concerts in intimate listening spaces, and cross-cultural settings. Whether presenting a classical raga, folk music projects such as Sarod Diaries or world music projects such as Spruce Ritual his aim remains constant—to use the sarod as a means of connection, offering listeners stillness, joy, and a sense of shared humanity through sound.
